Erected by JOHN SILVER merchant Stonehaven in memory of his wife MARY ANN BURGESS d.23 Jan.1893 aged 63. His sons JAMES d.24 Sept.1890 aged 24, WILLIAM d.11 July 1892 aged 24, ALFRED d.29 Jan.1904 aged 28. (LHS) JOHN SILVER merchant Stonehaven d.20 Mar.1901 aged 72. - John Silver, a prominent Stonehaven businessman, was said to have provided the author Robert Louis Stevenson with the name for his Treasure Island character Long John Silver. Stevenson wrote the novel while in Braemar and his father spent time working in Stonehaven and would have been familiar with the Silver surname, maybe even the fact that one of the Silvers spent time in the West Indies. Another explanation is the headstone of a John Silver (from Maryculter) who is buried in Edinburgh at Grayfriars which can be seen from a pub that Stevenson used to frequent
